Perak (Jawi: ڨيرق,), one of the 13 states of Malaysia, is the second largest state in Peninsular Malaysia. It borders Kedah and the Thai Yala Province to the north; Penang to the northwest; Kelantan and Pahang to the east; Selangor to the south, and the Straits of Malacca to the west. Perak also is the second most developed state in Malaysia, behind Selangor. The state's administrative capital of Ipoh was known historically for tin-mining activities until the price of the metal dropped, severely affecting the state's economy. The royal capital, however remains at Kuala Kangsar, where the palace of the Sultan of Perak is located.
Royal Belum State Park / Hutan Simpan Belum
The Royal Belum State Park is a huge park in the northern parts of Peninsular Malaysia. It is part of the even bigger Belum-Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC) that is shared with Thailand.
Together with Taman Negara National Park it is one of the oldest rainforest in world, dating back over 130 million years.Belum is a state park and not an officialNational Park. This means that local government is allowed to use the area for production forest and it is open for future development. There are efforts to get the government to gazette Belum as a national park, though up till now only a part of the huge forest is conserved and protected as state park. Belum has the potential to become one of Malaysia's premier eco-tourism destinations, if managed well.
Gunung Lang Recreational Park / Taman Rekreasi Gunung Lang
Gunung Lang Recreational Park, located off Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (formerly Kuala Kangsar Road), It was opened in October 2000, Covering an area of 30.35 hectares out of which 14.16 hectares consists of the lake, the park is divided into two sections. It is developed around a scenic backdrop of limestone hills of Gunung Lang and Gunung Bilike. The main attractions of Taman Rekreasi Gunung Lang are the man-made cascading waterfall atop a limestone hill, a 2km broadwalk over the swamp and lookout towers.
Pulau Orang Utan
Pulau Orang Utan or Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation is located within the eco-friendly getaway of Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, a 7,000 acre freshwater lakeside in Semanggol, Perak. Pulau Orang Utan was formerly known as Pulau Panjang, comprises a vast 35 acre area, 5 acre of which has been set aside as a research centre for these endangered species. At present, there are 24 orang utans, of which 16 were born in the island and 1 was born at BJ island, another island near to Pulau Orang Utan. FYI, the earliest orang utans were brought in from Borneo, making Pulau Orang Utan the first ex-situ conservation in Malaysia.

Bukit Larut / Maxwell Hill
It was founded in 1884 by William Edward Maxwell, the British Assistant Resident of Perak. Perched at 1250m above sea level, it is the wettest place in Malaysia, with an annual rainfall of over 500cm. Temperature here hovers around 15 degrees centigrade in the early morning and late afternoon, dipping to 10 degrees centigrade at night.
The Tea Garden House, situated mid-way up the hill, was once the office of a tea plantation. However, when their tea plants did not grow very well here, the British shifted their agricultural endeavour to the Cameron Highlands, where the Boh Tea Plantation is now. All types of Malaysian flowers including the rare giant fishtail palm thrive here. The golden sunflowers grown here are the largest in the country. On a clear day, one can view the peninsular coastline and the Straits of Malacca, sometimes stretching as far as Penang to the north and Pangkor Island to the south
Air Terjun Ulu Kenas
Ulu Kenas Amenity Forest is located in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Fasilities available include parking, toilet, resting huts, information centre, chalet, stall, hall, prayer hall and hanging bridge, 15 km from Kuala Kangsar Town through Kuala Kangsar-Manong Road and 45 km from Ipoh City. Ulu Kenas Amenity Forest is located in the Bubu Forest Reserve which is a hill dipterocarp forest.
Taman Herba / Herb Garden
The 22 hectares of the Taman Herba (herb garden) was re-launched in June 2009, by the Sultan of Perak, and is nestled along the road to Batu Gajah for those coming from Gopeng, in Perak. Alternatively the gardens are easily accessible for people wanting to visit Kellie’s Castle, or perhaps meandering their way along the back road from Ipoh to Kampar. The turn off to the herb gardens is practically equidistant from the Simpang Pulai and Gopeng exits from the North/South Highway.
The radiantly beautiful (state run) herb garden is exactly what it says it is – a garden full of useful herbs but, more than that, it is also a plant research centre and a repository for Malaysian herb knowledge. Malaysian herbs, traditionally used in treating any number of complaints, including diabetes and high blood pressure, are investigated at the centre to determine the accuracy of ancient claims, which inevitably tend to be proven to be true.
Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery
Istana Ulu - Istana Kota (Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery), Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, Perak Built: 1898 to 1903 - Architect: Maurice. The artefacts in Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah are displayed in the Istana Ulu , first occupied by Sultan Idris 1 in 1903 and restored 100 years later. The palace is situated in delightful and well maintained landscaped grounds and the main gallery of the museum displays mementos pertaining to the current Sultan, including exhibits of his early school life, sporting activities, university life and regal happenings.
A subsidiary gallery exhibits cars which the Sultan has owned in the past, including three Rolls Royces. A third gallery displays some of the many of the gifts which have been given to the Sultan during his reign.The gallery is open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Friday when the hours are 9.30 a.m. to 12.15 and 2.45 to 5 p.m. The website is www.muziumperak.gov.my. There is a small admission fee which is reduced to RM2 each for the elderly (undefined). Please note that shoes have to be removed before entering any of the galleries.
Menara Condong, Teluk Intan
The leaning tower of Teluk Intan is the Malaysia equivalent of the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. It is located in the centre of the town of Teluk Intan, Perak. The tower is slanted leftward, similar to the Tower of Pisa. It is 25.5 metres tall and, from the outside, looks like a 8 storey building, though inside it is actually divided into 3 storeys. The tower is located in the center of a square surrounded by Jalan Pasar, Jalan Selat, Jalan Bandar and Jalan Ah Cheong.
Pulau Pangkor / Pangkor Island
Pangkor (pulau means "island") consists of nine islands. Only two of them are inhabited: Pulau Pangkor and Pangkor Laut.Pulau Pangkor is an island off the coast of Perak in north-west peninsular Malaysia, reached by ferry either from the old jetty or from Marina Island jetty both located in Lumut .For the locals the island is famous for the beaches such as Teluk Nipah, Coral Bay, Teluk Belanda and Pasir Bogak. The most famous local product of the island is ikan bilis(anchovies) and other dried fish products that are irresistable to the locals.
Kuala Kangsar
Kuala Kangsar today has spread across the gentle undulating lands along the bank to accommodate the growing community but its core and historical part of town still sits quietly on the high grounds by the bend of the river. A familiar structure of a royal town, the royal palace is usually the centre of the town where subjects would later build their homes around, close to the palace. Presumably, many of the subjects that served the courts and the Sultan would have had to be nearby in any event for emergencies etc.
ZooTaiping Night Safari
The Taiping Night Safari is a firtst of its kind in Malaysia. Bathed in lighting similar to moonlight, the beauty and splendour of nature is enhanced. In an effort to maintain the experience of a natural environment, the Taiping Night Safari attempts to display nocturnal animals in natural looking settings. This provides the opportunity for visitors to appreciate and value the treasures of nature while enjoying oneself.
The Taiping Night Safari is a unique tourism product where animals which are active at night are displayed using special lighting similar to moonlight. Visitors will be ablt to experience this environment similar to wildlife habitats where the sounds made by numerous creatures can be heard. To fully appreciate this experience visitors are required to minimize all sounds, even speech so that the sounds of the night creatures can be heard. Reduced noise will also help to maintain the peaceful atmosphere of the Night Safari. Torchlights and flash cameras are not allowed to be used in the Night Safari as this will disturb the animals on display.
Dutch Fort on Pangkor
The ruins of the Dutch Fort on Pangkor Island are the remnants of an outpost of Dutch attempts to control trade in the Malay peninsula. In the Malay language, the fort is called Kota Belanda. The fort was built by the Dutch in 1670 for storage and protection of tin supplies from the sultanate of Perak. The fort was destroyed in 1690 by the Malays who were discontent with the methods used by the Dutch in obtaining minerals.
Gua Tempurung
Gua Tempurung is a cave in Gopeng, Perak, Malaysia. It is popular among spelunkers, or caving enthusiasts. More than 3 km long, it is one of the longest caves in Peninsula Malaysia. Part of it has been developed as a show cave with electric lighting and walkways and there are a range of tours of different lengths and difficulty. A fine river cave, the river passage runs about 1.6 km through the hill. There are three very large chambers and some spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. There are plans to develop the surrounding area. By the end of 2006 a go kart centre and a horse riding area had opened.
Muzium Arkeologi Lenggong
Lenggong Archaeological Museum or the 'Archaeological Museum Charming City' located near the town of Charming City Lenggong, Perak. It is a prehistoric site dating 74,000 years ago. Lenggong town located about 100 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur via the Kuala Kangsar to the CBD. It is the site of the oldest human settlements activities in Peninsular Malaysia. Lenggong Archaeological Museum is also showcasing People Perak, Peninsular Malaysia's oldest population found in the caves in the area are on display there. Frame is dated between 10 to 11.000 years ago, a Stone Age man, from the Paleolithic period.
Kellie's Castle
Kellie's Castle (sometimes also called Kellie's Folly) is located near Batu Gajah, and is about 20 minutes' drive from Ipoh, Perak,Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie Smith. According to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or a home for his son.Descendants of the Tamil labourers brought over to Malaysia to work on the mansion still live nearby even now. Kellie's Castle is now a popular local tourist attraction and was used as a setting in the 1999 film Anna and the King and 2000 film Skyline Cruisers
Taiping Lake Gardens.
Built on top of an abandoned tin mine, the gardens were opened in 1880, earning them a place in the history books as the first public garden in then-Malaya. Huge ancient rain trees (“angsana”) line the lake; their branches stretching from one end of the road into the waters across, making the perfect backdrop for couples taking their wedding photos.
Spread over 64 hectares, the lake has ten scenic lakes and ponds, a Lotus Pool, charming bridges, tracks for jogging and reflexology, all surrounded by tropical plants, flowers, trees and wildlife. For kids, a roller-skating rink, paddleboat rides, and a playground ensure that the outdoors appeal more than the latest video game. Heritage structures surround the lush greenery, including the Old Residency, formerly the home of the Secretary to the Resident, the Raja’s House and army officers’ residences. The nearby Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut) also makes an ideal place for jungle trekking and camping.
Gua Gendang & Gua Itik
Gua Gendang is a new discovery and is a unique attraction located in the Pengkalan Hulu district in Perak. It is located in an attractive natural location surrounded by the green and the nature of a tropical forest. Gua Gendang is also a historic cave as it was once used as a communist hideout during the Emergency period some 50 years ago. The Gua Gendang Tourism and Recreation Complex, established by the Pengkalan Hulu District Council in Perak, transform the accommodations located on the cave into a peaceful village-like environment. This serene ambiance is further enhanced by a river which runs under the cave approximately 300 feet from the accommodation area and from there, you can witness the Miracle of God's creation blessed on the land. Imagine the challenges and thrills you will experience during the 45 minutes of river exploration in the cave while trekking through the cave, beautifully carved by nature as a result of erosion. You may also choose to traverse the cave and the river for 4 hours to view the beauty and majesty of its 7 waterfalls.
Songkran Festival Kampung Tasek, Pengkalan Hulu
Songkran Festival, also known as the Water Festival celebrated the Thai New Year (or Songkran) is celebrated every year around April 13 to 15 in Thailand, in conjunction with the New Year for most of the traditional calendar used in South and Southeast Asia. Songkran festival falls on the hottest day of every year in Thailand, at the end of the dry season. April is the hottest month in Thailand (temperatures can reach 40 ° C), the foundation day celebrations poured water fun with the others. Initially, the Thai New Year was the beginning of the year in Thailand. Lombong Bijih Timah, Rahman Hydraulic
Rahman Hydraulic Tin Ore Mine has been in operation in Klian Intan, Hulu Perak since 1907. The mining company carried out the largest mining activities of hard rock tin ore in Malaysia. The use of hydraulic pumps to extract tin ore into the hearth distinguishes Rahman Hydraulic from other mines. At present, Rahman Hydraulic's tin ore mine is still operating as an open mine. Interestingly enough, it has now become an educational spot for the current and future generation in addition to it becoming a tourism focal point.
